Leadership & School Council

Positions of Responsibility

At Howe Green House School, we believe in instilling essential life skills and leadership qualities in our pupils. Our commitment to holistic education extends to providing opportunities for pupils to take on positions of responsibility during their final year with us, fostering confidence, and developing strong leadership skills. These positions play a crucial role in shaping the character and future success of our pupils as they move onto secondary school.

There are a range of leadership roles, including Head Pupil, House Captain and Sports Captain.  The pupils have the opportunity to rotate and experience each role over their time in Year Six and are given various opportunities to take on leadership responsibilities, whether it be representing their class at school council, buddying younger pupils in the school, organising an event or competition, or participating in events for their chosen charity.  The roles also provide many opportunities for public speaking, presentations and to foster a strong sense of self-assurance. The pupils serve as role models for their peers, demonstrating exceptional leadership qualities and a commitment to the school’s values.

The benefits of these positions of responsibility extend beyond their time with us. These roles help them develop valuable skills such as communication, problem-solving, and decision-making. These experiences contribute to the development of responsible, empathetic, and well-rounded individuals.

School Council

At Howe Green House, we believe in empowering our pupils to actively contribute to the school community, fostering a sense of ownership and collaboration. Our School Council, led by Year Six pupils, is a dynamic platform that provides pupils from Reception to Year Five with the opportunity to voice their ideas, share concerns, and actively participate in shaping the school’s environment.

The School Council is proudly led by our Year Six pupils who serve as Chairpersons. These exceptional leaders bring enthusiasm, responsibility, and a deep commitment to making a positive impact on the school community. They guide the council’s meetings, facilitate discussions, and act as liaisons between pupils and school staff.

The School Council is designed to be inclusive, with representatives from Reception to Year Five actively participating in meetings and decision-making processes. This inclusive approach ensures that the perspectives of all age groups are considered, creating a rich and diverse environment where every voice is valued.  Through their involvement, pupils develop essential leadership skills, learn the value of teamwork, and gain a deeper understanding of the democratic process.  It also allows the elected children an opportunity to raise ideas and suggestions with the Co-Headteachers and Senior Leadership Team.

Our School Council aims to actively give pupils a forum to express their opinion and make suggestions as to how we can improve our school. Through including our pupils in these discussions, they are given an opportunity to represent and act in the interest of all pupils, which is greatly empowering! The skills developed by each representative during their time on the School Council are all essential life skills.  As well as being a vital link between the pupils and staff, the children are also responsible for planning, marketing and coordinating many exciting fundraising events.

Above all, serving on the School Council is a rewarding experience and many pupils are incredibly enthusiastic to return to serve another term as their class representative…. competition is fierce!
