Wellbeing & Pastoral (Prep)

At Howe Green House, we believe wellbeing should be based on self-discovery and recognise that every child has a different pathway. Our role is to empower the children to succeed with the personal challenges they face, and help them to thrive in an ever-changing world.  We firmly believe that positive mental health is the foundation of learning and as such, pay close attention to the emotional needs of our pupils and staff.

Wellbeing and mental health are openly discussed as part of the culture of Howe Green House, and we focus on the Five Ways to Wellbeing to promote ways in which the pupils, staff and wider community can look after their wellbeing.

The Five Ways to Wellbeing:

  • Connect
  • Be Active
  • Keep Learning
  • Give
  • Take Notice

As a school, we encourage the children to understand and regulate their emotions by using the Zones of Regulation. This helps support children when they are facing challenges, whether that is everyday problems or something more complex.

To ensure we are meeting the pastoral needs of our pupils and staff, we track wellbeing and monitor this data to identify patterns and trends.

At Howe Green House, we offer a wide variety of wellbeing opportunities to ensure we maintain good mental health and have a substantial recovery programme for those that need additional support through our caring staff and Golden Retriever named Willow.

We care deeply about wellbeing and work hard to meet our School’s wellbeing and mental health needs.  The pastoral provision we provide ensures we are aware of children’s wellbeing, able to identify need and address any concerns, in order to enable them to be the best versions of themselves.

Houses & Pastoral System

At Howe Green House, children are placed within a House: Mulberry, Cedar, Chestnut or Hornbeam. By doing so, we foster a sense of belonging and identity within the school community. By being assigned to a House, children form strong bonds with peers across different year groups, creating a supportive network of friends and mentors. We strongly believe that our House System promotes teamwork, collaboration and healthy competition, as pupils work together to earn points or awards for their House through various activities and events.

School Houses at Howe Green House promote inclusivity and diversity by bringing together pupils from various backgrounds, abilities and interests. Regardless of academic performance or co-curricular involvement, every child has the chance to contribute to their House’s success and feel valued within our school community.

Pastoral Support

At Howe Green House, we believe pastoral support is essential in ensuring all children are reaching their potential. These formative years provide children with social, emotional and academic opportunities that enable them to grow both as individuals and within a safe and welcoming school community. Our dedicated pastoral care ensures that students feel emotionally secure, fostering a positive and supportive learning environment.

Whilst wellbeing is key to our holistic approach at Howe Green House, and addressed across all areas of the curriculum, we understand that individual needs and concerns are inevitable, and we provide differing levels of support to ensure that every child receives the care and encouragement they need.

By consistently promoting pupil wellbeing, we are achieving academic success and lifelong personal development.

Levels of Support

Foundation

As part of our everyday practice, wellbeing is promoted through an open and honest approach to mental health. Each year group has weekly PSHE lessons as well as Philosophy for Learning which teaches children how to ask difficult questions, explore the world around them and recognise different beliefs and opinions. We have a School Council who work closely together to provide strategies to improve Howe Green House and these representatives change regularly to allow for all children to get the opportunity to stand. Our Year Six leaders offer support and guidance to the younger children and the staff regularly model and promote ways in which we can look after our wellbeing.  As a small school, the staff are able to build excellent relationships with the children to truly understand them. Our House system also encourages children to work collaboratively and connect with teammates to reach goals.

Support

If a child is identified as needing support for their wellbeing, there are many avenues we explore to make sure we are providing the necessary provision. This could be a friendship group, our buddying system or check-ins with their form tutor. If we feel as though the support is not meeting their needs, we can move to further support.

Further Support

Further support comes in many different shapes and sizes and is led by various qualified teaching and support staff. We offer a wide range of further support including Boxercise, Dog Therapy, Drawing and Talking and Zones of Regulation group work. These may be as part of a group or delivered via one to one sessions depending on the need of each child.

External Support

If a child is experiencing a particularly challenging time, and the provision we provide is not having a positive impact, we have many external support systems to explore including an Art Therapist who visits the school and a number of charities, foundations and support services with whom we have excellent relationships.
