Performing Arts (Prep)
Drama
The Prep children are empowered to be creative and their imaginations are supported through their weekly Drama lessons. As well as using games and role play to boost their confidence, children learn collaboration, leadership, presentation and communication skills that will help them throughout their lives.
Drama lessons teach the Prep children how to express themselves, work together as a team and think creatively. They also help children to boost their emotional literacy, which includes how to express themselves and their emotions.
Regular class assemblies showcase the amazing talents of our pupils to their peers and families. These assemblies are based on current topics and wonderfully summarise the learning that has taken place in the classroom. Over the years, we have been educated by the Prep children in topics such as The Victorians, The Romans and India.
There is also the opportunity to participate in our extended Drama offering as part of our enrichment programme. Pupils have entered external competitions ranging from Shakespeare monologues to musical theatre performances with enormous success.
Howe Green House School Productions
In addition to the Prep school’s weekly lessons, waiting in the wings are our spectacular productions where all of the Prep children participate.
As a small school, all of the children benefit from having the opportunity to take to the stage and shine in the productions. We produce two shows each year, one featuring Years Three and Four and the other featuring Years Five and Six. As a result of this, all children are provided with many opportunities to act, sing, dance and perform in famous musicals and plays. Some of our past productions include – Bugsy Malone, Grease, Oliver, The Little Mermaid, The Jungle Book and Shakespeare Rocks.
Music
At Howe Green House, Music is not just a subject – it is a vibrant part of our school community, woven into the fabric of daily life. Every child, from Little Oaks through to Year Six, is fully immersed in a dynamic musical journey where creativity, expression and fun take centre stage.
Our commitment to excellence is evident in our high musical standards, with pupils in Year Six earning prestigious Music Scholarships and Awards from top local senior schools. But more than that, we believe in the joy of making music together.
Children receive weekly lessons from our dedicated music specialists. These sessions focus on hands-on music-making, exploring sound and discovering the magic of music in a playful and engaging way.
Our school-wide singing assemblies every week bring the entire community together in harmony, and music plays a starring role in our class assemblies throughout the year.
For our Prep pupils, we offer the Prep Choir, which meets every Monday morning before school. This choir gives children the chance to develop their vocal talents and perform in various school events, including the much-anticipated Christmas Concert.
And it’s not just the pupils who get to join in the fun – our parents are invited to be part of the musical life at Howe Green House. The Howe Green Singers, our parents’ choir, meet each week and joins forces with our children’s choirs for the annual Carol Service and Speech Day at the end of the Summer term.
Peripatetic Lessons
Howe Green House is fortunate to have a team of talented and passionate instrumental teachers who bring their expertise to our School every week. Whether it’s the soothing sounds of the piano, the energetic beats of the drums or the bright notes of the trumpet, our peripatetic teachers inspire and guide our young musicians on their journey.
Children typically begin instrumental lessons from Year Two onwards, and as they progress, they are encouraged to take Associated Board exams. By the time they reach Year Six, many of our pupils have achieved Grade Three or higher in one or more instruments, setting them up for continued musical success in their senior schools. Additionally, each term, our instrumentalists have the opportunity to perform in Tea Time Concerts, providing a regular performing time to showcase their progress in a relaxed and supportive environment.
Art & Design Technology
At Howe Green House School, Art and Design Technology are essential parts of our vibrant curriculum – nurturing creativity, innovation and joy in every pupil.
Our spacious Art Room is an inspiring space where pupils engage in diverse activities, from painting and drawing to sculpture, textiles and digital art. Design and Technology lessons emphasise hands-on learning, allowing pupils to safely explore tools, systems and mechanics.
We are incredibly proud of our pupils’ achievements with national recognition at the ISA National Art Competition and successful scholarship applications to top secondary schools.
Above all, our Art Room is a place where creativity flourishes, and every pupil leaves feeling inspired.
